Complete Online Submission

To submit items for examination, or request an LOP complete the online submission processing request for your case using the interactive web application. The web application includes written instructions for each step of the process.

For technical issues please contact the Centre of Forensic Sciences (CFS) through the email or via telephone at 647-329-1350. Please note, the telephone are available during regular Centre Receiving Office (CRO) hours only (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, excluding statutory holidays).

Once the processing request is submitted to CFS, an acknowledgement notification is sent via email indicating receipt of the request and which items are approved to submit. The email will include packaging instructions and corresponding labels.

Scientific advisors are available for consultation from the outset, before items are sent to the CFS.

Information for clients

Clients can submit evidence for examination through the online system. Register in the evidence web-submission system to submit items for analysis or to request a Letter of Opinion (LOP).

We provide lectures and training as part of our educational services to support law enforcement officers and major stakeholders who administer justice in Ontario.

The centre seeks to develop partnerships with academic institutions and Ontario government ministries to deliver research projects in forensic science.

Expressions of interest to work with the CFS may be submitted online to the CFS R&D unit.

Package Exhibits

All exhibits must be securely packaged for submission. In addition to the packaging instruction included in the acknowledgement notification, please consult the Investigator’s Handbooks for further information on appropriate packaging materials and recommended safe handling and packaging practices.

Delivering your items to the Centre of Forensic Sciences

Toronto Laboratory

Items may be delivered to CFS in-person using the evidence submission lockers.  Items may also be sent by courier or mail to the CRO.

CRO staff are available for in person consultation if needed from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Electronic Check-in for in person delivery of evidence

 The electronic check-in system is used to record the receipt of evidence delivered in person either via the submission lockers or at the CRO counter.

Register in the system using one of the computer stations located in the locker area or the CRO counter. Follow the instructions on the computer screen available for each step. For technical issues, please contact CRO.

Once registered, log-in and proceed to check-in the items. Upon completion of the electronic check-in, a receipt is sent via email to the submitter. The CRO is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding statutory holidays. In person submissions are received at CRO ground floor at the rear of building. Directions to the Toronto laboratory.

After Hours Delivery

Evidence lockers are available for the submission of cases and exhibits 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Do not submit potential explosives in the evidence submission lockers. Contact the CRO at 647-329-1350 to arrange for delivery of such exhibits during regular office hours.

Vehicle and Large Item Submissions

Seek consultation with the appropriate Section Scientific Advisor prior to submitting a vehicle or large item for examination. A vehicle bay may be assigned (if needed). Please contact CRO with the expected delivery date and time to ensure someone is available to provide assistance.

If a submission cannot be made during regular office hours, building security is available for escort to the vehicle bay. Leave the keys to the vehicle (and the warrant, if applicable) on the windshield and include any special instructions on the web submission (e.g. protect interior for fingerprinting). Complete the electronic check-in process for the vehicle in the evidence locker area, which is located at ground level.

Sault Ste. Marie Laboratory

Submissions may be delivered to CFS in-person during regular office hours or in the evidence submission lockers outside of regular business hours. Items may also be sent by courier or mail.

The CRO is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding statutory holidays. In-person submissions are received at CRO located inside the main laboratory entrance. Directions to the Sault Ste. Marie Laboratory.

After Hours Delivery

A series of secure lockers, are available to clients for after-hours delivery of items. OLG security will provide clients with access to the lockers area.
